Shikebiki fan

7.5" 30 ken (22.5 cm)
6.5 sun 30 ken (19.5 cm)
Japanese paper, burnt sooty bamboo, with carving

The traditional colors of Edo were painted by hand by craftsmen.
The Japanese paper is dyed with dyestuffs as it is, and the fan surface is hand-painted with fine lines by skilled craftsmen.

Shike" means silk threads drawn from silkworms, and "shike-biki" is a technique of dyeing delicate striped patterns on fabric with a comb-like shike brush. All the work is done by hand by specialized craftsmen, and it is different from weaving stripes in that it can produce a gentle and diverse range of stripes and latticework. Shisekibiki fans have this technique applied to the fan surface.
