type of fan worn during the Edo period

7.5 cm x 15 ken (22.5 cm) fan

As the name suggests, the Edo fan is a form of fan sold in Edo (present-day Tokyo). Compared to Kyoto-style fans with elegant designs such as "Kacho-fu-getsu" (flowers, birds, winds and the moon), the patterns are mainly "stylish" and bold, such as komon patterns, striped patterns, animals, and letters. In order to match the bold patterns, the number of bones in a fan is reduced and the outer bones (bones at both ends) are made thicker. Compared to Kyo Senshi, which are made by many craftsmen working in separate departments, Edo Senshi are made by a single craftsman.
