The middle fan is divided into three parts and depicts 53 cats from the work "Neko Kaiyoshi Gojusanbiki" (Fifty-three Cats) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a Ukiyoe artist of the Edo period (1603-1868). Kuniyoshi was an unparalleled cat lover, and this caricature compares the inn towns in the Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido to the behavior of cats in a pun.
